The Duke of Norfolk’s
and Thomas Howard’s forces arrived late in the day of the battle. There is some
debate as to whether the elderly Norfolk actual reached the battlefield or
sought rest beforehand. However, the fresh troops under his command probably
turned the tide of the day, possibly because it is believed they directly engaged
the stretched and weary Lancastrian flank.
I have decided to represent
the Norfolk/Howard contingent marching en route, rather than lined up prepared for
battle. And led by Howard rather than Norfolk given there is far greater certainty
that the former was present at the battle.
Here is one of the
two archer stands I'll produce. Modest modifications and scratch building to
give the impression of troops on the move, relatively relaxed and engaging with
each other – so with bows and arrows protected, some helmets stowed on belts and
soft hats worn. Most of the figures are Perry plastics with Tudor heads, the
drummer is from the Essex’s Swiss range. He had been
painted before as a standalone piece. The embossed Swiss crosses on his sleeves
have now been filed down and like the rest of the stand will be
(re)undercoated. The bows and arrow bags are based on original images are simple
lead sheet affairs.
More as this group
develops.
